Saudi Arabia's Renewable Energy Expansion: Strategic Partnerships and Technological Advancements

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Saudi Arabia is intensifying its efforts to diversify its energy portfolio by forging strategic partnerships and embracing technological innovations in the renewable energy sector. Central to this initiative is ACWA Power, a leading Saudi developer and operator of power generation and desalinated water production plants, which has been instrumental in advancing the kingdom's renewable energy projects.

In early 2025, ACWA Power announced seven partnership agreements during its Innovation Days event. These collaborations span various sectors, including renewable energy, water desalination, battery storage, and green hydrogen. Notably, ACWA Power has partnered with Siemens Energy to develop advanced energy transmission corridors, essential for efficiently distributing renewable energy. Additionally, the company is collaborating with Hysata, an Australian electrolyser manufacturer, to scale up cost-effective green hydrogen production in Saudi Arabia. This partnership aims to position the kingdom as a global hub for green hydrogen innovation, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 goals.

International collaborations have also been pivotal. In May 2025, ACWA Power signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth $500 million with U.S. companies, expanding its collaboration to over $6 billion. These agreements encompass green hydrogen, renewable energy, and clean technology sectors, supporting Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Furthermore, ACWA Power and SEFE Securing Energy for Europe have established a partnership to deliver 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to Germany and Europe by 2030. This collaboration aims to strengthen energy cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Germany, contributing to global decarbonization efforts and enhancing energy security in Europe.

These strategic partnerships and technological advancements underscore Saudi Arabia's commitment to transitioning towards a sustainable energy future, leveraging both domestic and international expertise to achieve its ambitious renewable energy targets.
