Poland To Reintroduce Border Controls With Germany And Lithuania

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Poland has announced the reintroduction of temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania, starting July 7, 2025. This measure aims to limit irregular migration flows between Poland and Germany, according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The decision follows Germany's tightening of its migration policies in May 2025, including increased border police presence and the rejection of some asylum seekers. Tusk stated that Poland informed Germany of the potential for border controls if such practices continued.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of maintaining the Schengen area while addressing concerns about migrant smuggling. The move has drawn criticism within Poland, particularly from right-wing nationalists. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has distanced herself from the current government's asylum rejection practices.
