Poland's Political Landscape: Government Reshuffle and Presidential Election Outcomes

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On July 23, 2025, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a significant government reshuffle aimed at revitalizing his administration. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, while Finance Minister Andrzej Domański assumed the expanded role of Minister of Finance and Economy, overseeing all economic departments. This restructuring follows the June 1, 2025, presidential election, where Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist candidate, secured victory. Nawrocki's presidency is expected to present challenges for Tusk's government, particularly concerning the implementation of pro-European reforms. The reshuffle reflects the government's efforts to address internal tensions and public dissatisfaction over stalled reforms.

The reshuffled cabinet now comprises 21 ministers, down from 26, with expanded powers granted to Finance Minister Domański and the establishment of a new energy ministry led by Miłosz Motyka. Foreign Minister Sikorski's promotion to Deputy Prime Minister is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the government's leadership amid declining approval ratings. The reshuffle aims to consolidate economic and energy responsibilities to better deliver on reform promises.

Karol Nawrocki's election as president has introduced a new dynamic to Poland's political landscape. His eurosceptic stance and nationalist policies are anticipated to challenge the government's pro-European agenda, potentially leading to legislative gridlock. Nawrocki's presidency may obstruct initiatives such as liberalizing abortion laws and overhauling the judiciary, both crucial for deeper EU integration. This political shift reflects growing public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and the prolonged stay of 2.5 million Ukrainian refugees, with support for their presence plummeting from 81% to 50%.

In response to these developments, Prime Minister Tusk has emphasized the urgency of restoring unity and implementing long-promised reforms. The reshuffle and the election results underscore the need for the government to navigate internal coalition tensions and address public concerns effectively. The coming months will be critical in determining the trajectory of Poland's political and economic future.
