Philippines' president Marcos Jr. requests cabinet resignations after disappointing election results

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Philippines' President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. requested the resignation of all cabinet secretaries on Thursday, May 22, 2025. This decision aims to "reset" the government following disappointing results in recent midterm elections. The presidential palace stated that this move allows Marcos Jr. to assess each department's performance.

The request comes after candidates supported by Marcos Jr. for the Senate obtained fewer seats than expected in the May 12 midterm elections. Marcos Jr. acknowledged that the poor election results reflected Filipinos' disappointment with the government's performance. He stated that the people expect results, not political maneuvers or excuses.

The Presidential Palace assured that government services would continue uninterrupted during the transition. The "performance" of current secretaries will be evaluated before decisions are made regarding their continuation in the government. Marcos Jr. has three years left in his term, and this cabinet reorganization is intended to create a sharper, faster, and more focused approach to addressing the population's most pressing needs.
