Netanyahu Accepts US-Backed Gaza Ceasefire Plan; Hamas Considers Proposal - May 2025

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly accepted a new ceasefire plan for the Gaza Strip, proposed by US envoy Steve Witkoff, in May 2025. This development occurs amidst ongoing international efforts to de-escalate the conflict and secure the release of hostages.

Netanyahu has communicated his agreement to the proposal, which includes the release of 10 living hostages and the return of the bodies of 18 deceased hostages in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire. The Witkoff proposal aims to facilitate further negotiations and humanitarian efforts. This proposal allows Israel to resume combat operations after the 60-day ceasefire if substantial negotiations have not progressed.

Hamas's response remains uncertain as they consider the terms. Sources suggest Hamas might request alterations to the plan, potentially prioritizing a permanent ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal. Negotiations are ongoing to address these concerns and reach a mutually agreeable resolution.
