Ukraine Imports Azerbaijani Gas via Trans-Balkan Route for First Time

17:48, 29 July

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Ukraine has commenced importing Azerbaijani natural gas through the Trans-Balkan pipeline, marking a significant step in diversifying its energy sources. This development follows an agreement between Ukraine's Naftogaz Group and SOCAR Energy Ukraine, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan's state oil company SOCAR. The initial delivery is being conducted via a test route through Bulgaria and Romania to the Ukrainian border.

Sergii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz, emphasized the strategic importance of this move, stating, "This is a small volume but a strategically important step that paves the way for long-term cooperation. It is also another example of diversifying supply sources and strengthening Ukraine’s energy security." He also expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian government and the Ministry of Energy for their support in reaching this agreement and thanked their Azerbaijani counterparts for their trust.

This initiative aligns with Ukraine's broader strategy to reduce reliance on single energy sources and enhance its energy security. By integrating the Trans-Balkan pipeline into its energy infrastructure, Ukraine aims to establish a more resilient and diversified energy supply chain, contributing to regional stability and energy independence.
