Russian forces launched coordinated assaults on Ukrainian cities, including Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Kolomyia, in the early hours of October 4-5, 2025. Employing drones and guided bombs, the attacks caused significant infrastructure damage, widespread power and water disruptions, and civilian casualties.
In Zaporizhzhia, at least 10 drone and guided bomb strikes were recorded, leading to power and water outages in several districts. Residential buildings were damaged, and preliminary reports indicate one fatality and six injuries, including a 16-year-old girl. The head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, reported one person killed and nine injured. More than 73,000 subscribers were left without electricity. A fire erupted at an industrial enterprise, and damage was reported to vehicles and private property.
This follows a September 25, 2025, incident where Ukrainian air forces reported downing a Russian Su-34 bomber over Zaporizhzhia. The incident occurred around 4 AM when the aircraft was carrying out a "terrorist strike on the city and dropping guided bombs." The Su-34 is known for its role in delivering guided bombs from a distance, posing a threat to cities near the front lines.
Simultaneously, Lviv and Kolomyia in the Ivan-Frankivsk Oblast were targeted. Lviv experienced multiple strike UAVs after 4 AM, followed by a missile strike after 5 AM. While specific targets in Lviv are undisclosed, reports suggest a missile strike on a TETS in Kolomyia, although this remains unconfirmed. Explosions were also heard in Burshtyn and Stryi.
The persistent targeting of Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, has been a recurring strategy since the full-scale invasion in 2022, straining the nation's power grid and causing widespread destruction. The Su-34 fighter-bomber, developed in the USSR and in serial production since 2006 , is a key component of Russia's aerial arsenal, designed for tactical deployment against ground and naval targets with substantial ordnance, including precision-guided munitions, enabling attacks from significant distances. Approximately 150 such aircraft have been built.
These coordinated strikes highlight the ongoing conflict's profound impact on civilian life and essential services. The deliberate targeting of infrastructure underscores a broader strategy aimed at disrupting Ukraine's operational capabilities and sowing disruption.
