Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, European Union foreign ministers decided to lift economic sanctions against Syria. The decision, announced by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in Brussels, aims to support the country's reconstruction after over a decade of civil war.

Kallas stated the EU's commitment to helping the Syrian people build a new, inclusive, and peaceful Syria. While economic sanctions are lifted, restrictions remain on individuals and organizations linked to the Bashar al-Assad regime. Sanctions also continue on the export of arms and technology used for internal repression.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed the EU's hope for a new relationship with Syria, emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies. The EU's decision follows a similar announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Syria.
