Cambodia Suspends Fuel Imports From Thailand Amid Border Tensions

18:52, 22 June

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On June 2025, Cambodia suspended all fuel imports from Thailand, following escalating tensions between the two nations.

The decision was a direct result of a border clash on May 28, 2025, in a disputed area along the border. The incident resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

Both countries have reinforced their military presence along the border, and the international community has expressed concern over the potential for further escalation.

Cambodia's Foreign Ministry urged its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Thailand. Thailand's consular affairs department also advised Thai nationals in Cambodia to steer clear of areas experiencing protests.

The border dispute has also had significant political repercussions in Thailand. A leaked phone call between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia's former leader, Hun Sen, revealed discussions that critics perceived as undermining Thailand's position. This leak led to public outrage and calls for Paetongtarn's resignation, further destabilizing her government.

As of June 22, 2025, the situation remains tense, with both countries maintaining heightened military readiness and diplomatic channels open in an attempt to de-escalate the conflict.
