Ecuador has deployed over 1,500 military personnel to its Amazon region. This action follows an attack by dissidents from the Colombian FARC guerrilla group. The attack resulted in the deaths of 11 Ecuadorian soldiers during an operation against illegal mining on May 12, 2025. The rebels, belonging to the Comandos de la Frontera group, ambushed an army squad. They used rifles, grenades, and explosives in the attack. The Ecuadorian government has declared the deceased soldiers national heroes and offered a reward for information leading to the capture of those responsible. The Colombian army has stated it is on high alert at the border. They will assist in the search for the criminals. The violence is increasing in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, a key region for cocaine production and shipment.
