Former Philippine President Duterte Arrested on ICC Warrant for Crimes Against Humanity

10:02, 11 March

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, 79, was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. The arrest was based on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing him of crimes against humanity related to his anti-drug campaign between 2016 and 2022.

The ICC warrant was received by the Interpol office in Manila, prompting the arrest upon Duterte's arrival from Hong Kong. During his anti-drug campaign, at least 6,000 people were killed in anti-drug operations and extrajudicial executions, according to police data.

Duterte questioned the legality of his arrest, stating he was not informed of the reasons. The Philippine presidential office confirmed the arrest followed due process after the Interpol office in Manila received the official ICC warrant copy.
