Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Strikes Caribbean Sea, Triggering Tsunami Warnings

05:01, 09 February

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, February 8, 2025, approximately 209 kilometers off the coast of the Cayman Islands, triggering tsunami warnings for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, according to US monitoring agencies.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, was centered 209 kilometers southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, at 18:23 local time (00:23 CET), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The US Tsunami Warning System initially issued alerts for a dozen countries, warning of potential waves between one and three meters. However, all warnings were lifted by 03:00 CET, with no reports of damage.

The earthquake was felt in southern coastal areas of western Cuba, but there have been no reports of personal or material damage on the island, and authorities have ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic issued a yellow alert (intermediate) for the country's coastlines following the earthquake, urging residents in coastal areas to move to higher, safer ground and avoid beaches. Boats were instructed to remain in port.

The earthquake was also felt in Honduras, as well as in Cancun, Mexico's main tourist destination.
