On November 12, 2024, the International Court of Justice announced its jurisdiction to hear claims filed by Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The court's decision revealed that it accepted two of Armenia's three objections in Azerbaijan's case against it, while all preliminary objections from Azerbaijan were dismissed.
Armenia's claim accuses Azerbaijan of violating the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination in Nagorno-Karabakh. Conversely, Azerbaijan has made similar allegations against Armenia.
Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, both nations have been engaged in prolonged negotiations aimed at achieving peace. In a statement to the UN General Assembly in late September 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his country’s willingness to amend its constitution to facilitate a peace treaty with Azerbaijan.
Additionally, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, during a conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on November 10, indicated that Baku and Yerevan are nearing an agreement on the text of the peace treaty.
