Severe Flooding in France Leads to Red Alerts in Six Departments Amid Exceptional Rainfall

19:07, 17 October

PARIS, Oct 17 - Six departments in France have been placed on red alert due to severe flooding caused by exceptional rainfall, with some areas receiving up to 630 mm (24.8 inches) in just 48 hours. The regions affected include Lyon and Cannes.

Authorities have responded by closing roads, evacuating neighborhoods, and advising residents to avoid dangerous situations, such as taking photos and videos of the flooding. As of now, there have been no reports of deaths or injuries, and the extent of the damage remains unclear.

This flooding event follows closely on the heels of Hurricane Kirk's remnants impacting western Europe and comes less than a month after Cannes experienced flash flooding. Earlier in September, central Europe also faced significant flooding, marking the worst in the region in at least two decades.
