Lunar Outpost Unveils Eagle LTV Prototype, Advancing Artemis Mission Capabilities

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Lunar Outpost has unveiled the Eagle, a high-fidelity prototype of its Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), offering a tangible glimpse into the future of lunar exploration. The unveiling at Space Symposium 2025 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, highlights the company's significant progress in developing robust mobility solutions for NASA's Artemis missions and the growing cislunar economy.

The Eagle LTV is engineered to substantially expand the operational range for Artemis astronauts and commercial payloads, enabling more ambitious scientific investigations and commercial ventures on the lunar surface. In April 2024, NASA awarded a Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services (LTVS) contract to the Lunar Dawn team, a consortium led by Lunar Outpost. This team includes collaborators such as General Motors, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, MDA Space, and Leidos, pooling diverse expertise to create a vehicle capable of withstanding extreme lunar conditions.

The Eagle LTV features an innovative flight deck-forward design for unobstructed views and is equipped with advanced autonomous navigation capabilities. Its reconfigurable cargo bed can be fitted with a robotic arm, enhancing its utility for various tasks. Notably, the Eagle is designed to operate through the challenging two-week lunar nights, enduring temperatures as low as -280 degrees Fahrenheit, thereby extending mission capabilities.

The vehicle is slated for a Preliminary Design Review this spring, a critical step to ensure it meets NASA's stringent requirements. NASA is expected to announce its selected LTVS provider by the end of the year. Lunar Outpost's dedication to lunar advancement is also demonstrated by its Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform (MAPP) rover, which was part of the Intuitive Machines' Athena lunar lander mission. Although the Athena lander experienced an off-nominal landing, the MAPP rover successfully survived the flight and transmitted valuable data.

The development of advanced lunar mobility solutions like the Eagle LTV is a cornerstone of the expanding global space economy, enabling greater scientific discovery and commercial opportunities. NASA's investment in commercial lunar initiatives is designed to grow U.S. commercial technical capability and drive innovation across the space sector.
