China's Tiangong space station has integrated Wukong AI, an advanced artificial intelligence system, to assist astronauts with mission planning and operations. The AI system, developed by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, was delivered to the station on April 24, 2025, via the Tianzhou 9 cargo spacecraft.
Wukong AI features a specialized domain-specific language system and a comprehensive knowledge base focused on human spaceflight standards. It has been instrumental in supporting the Shenzhou XX crew, which includes mission commander Senior Colonel Chen Dong, Colonel Chen Zhongrui, and Colonel Wang Jie. The crew is currently on a six-month mission aboard the Tiangong space station.
During preparations for a spacewalk on June 26, 2025, Chen Dong and Wang Jie utilized Wukong AI to access detailed activity schedules. Wang Jie commented on the AI's effectiveness, stating, "The content it offered is highly comprehensive." This highlights the AI's capability to streamline complex operational procedures.
Zou Pengfei, a researcher at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, explained that Wukong AI integrates both ground-based and orbital models into a unified intelligent question-answering platform. This hybrid approach enhances operational efficiency, supports astronaut psychological well-being, and strengthens coordination between astronauts and mission control.
The integration of AI in space exploration is a growing trend, with Wukong AI demonstrating the potential for enhanced mission success. Similar AI systems are being used by NASA and the European Space Agency to optimize mission outcomes and improve astronaut support in complex space environments.
