Virgin Atlantic and Boeing Partner to Equip 787 Fleet with Next-Generation Starlink Connectivity

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Virgin Atlantic is advancing its in-flight passenger experience through a significant technological collaboration with Boeing, focusing on upgrading the connectivity across its entire Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. This strategic alliance centers on integrating high-speed, streaming-capable Wi-Fi powered by cutting-edge satellite technology.

The physical integration involves installing the Boeing Aerodynamic Shroud, a new component designed to house advanced Electronically Steered Phased Array (ESA) antennas. This hardware is crucial for leveraging Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and multi-orbit satellite networks, which promise more robust, high-bandwidth internet access throughout the flight. The agreement, announced at MRO Europe on October 15, positions Virgin Atlantic to offer connectivity that rivals ground-based performance.

Corneel Koster, Virgin Atlantic's Chief Customer and Operating Officer, emphasized the partnership's role in realizing the airline's goal of creating a "home away from home" environment for travelers. Koster noted that this move transforms how customers stay connected, offering low-latency, super high-speed Wi-Fi. Doug Backhus, Vice President for Boeing Global Services, expressed satisfaction in providing the necessary engineering expertise and hardware to enable this faster, more reliable service aboard the Dreamliners.

Industry analysts view the shift to LEO constellations as increasingly vital for competitive advantage, as modern travelers expect seamless digital access at altitude. The ESA antennas allow for precise tracking of fast-moving satellites, ensuring a consistent link as the aircraft travels globally. This initiative underscores a shared commitment between the two companies to redefine digital access in the skies, transforming potential downtime into productive or entertaining moments for passengers.
