Mike Fincke Surpasses 400 Days in Space, ISS Research Continues Amidst Resupply Preparations

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

NASA astronaut Mike Fincke achieved a significant career milestone on August 20, 2025, marking his 400th day aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This accomplishment places him among a select group of astronauts, ranking him as the ninth American and the 38th individual globally to reach this duration in space.

Fincke's extensive time in orbit is a testament to his dedication to space exploration. The current Expedition 73 crew, including Fincke, has been actively engaged in a diverse range of scientific research and essential maintenance tasks aboard the ISS. Recent research highlights include astronaut Jonny Kim participating in a study using a Canadian-designed vest to collect data on heart health and blood flow, aiming to refine physiological measurements in space. JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui collected saliva and blood samples for a study investigating the effects of microgravity on cellular immune functions.

Furthering the understanding of physical resilience, NASA astronaut Zena Cardman utilized the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) to measure force during static deadlifts, contributing to strategies for maintaining muscle strength in microgravity. Cardman and Kim also collaborated on using an ultrasound device to scan Cardman's arteries as part of the ongoing CIPHER studies, which explore various physiological aspects of space travel.

Beyond scientific endeavors, the crew has undertaken crucial maintenance. Fincke and Cardman worked together in the U.S. Quest airlock to service high-definition cameras on extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) helmet assemblies, ensuring their functionality for future spacewalks. Preparations are also underway for the upcoming SpaceX CRS-33 resupply mission, with a launch targeted for August 24, 2025. This mission will deliver vital supplies and equipment to support ongoing research and operations aboard the ISS.

The ISS, continuously crewed for over 24 years, remains a vital hub for international collaboration and scientific advancement. The dedication of astronauts like Mike Fincke not only contributes to groundbreaking research with benefits for Earth but also inspires future generations of space explorers.
