Kyivstar, one of the leading mobile operators in Ukraine, has joined forces with SpaceX's Starlink to introduce direct-to-cell satellite connectivity. This collaboration is designed to bolster communication resilience across Ukraine, offering mobile services even in areas with limited network coverage or during disruptions.
The service is slated to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, initially supporting SMS and OTT messaging. Subsequent phases will incorporate voice and data services, ensuring a phased integration into Kyivstar's existing infrastructure. Starlink's technology allows smartphones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing terrestrial cell towers.
This initiative is part of Kyivstar's plan to enhance connectivity in remote areas. The partnership with Starlink highlights a commitment to leveraging advanced technologies. VEON, Kyivstar's parent company, has invested significantly in Ukraine, including a $1 billion commitment for recovery and reconstruction from 2023 to 2027.
