Astroscale's New Patent Advances Space Debris Removal Techniques

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Astroscale Holdings Inc., a Japanese company specializing in space sustainability, has been granted a U.S. patent for a method and system designed to remove multiple objects from orbit simultaneously. This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency and scalability of active debris removal (ADR) operations.

The patented system involves a servicer spacecraft that docks with multiple pieces of space debris, such as defunct satellites and spent rocket stages. These objects are then transferred to a separate "shepherd" vehicle, which is responsible for guiding them into Earth's atmosphere for controlled reentry, thereby reducing the risk of debris surviving reentry and posing threats on the ground.

This technology is particularly timely, given the increasing congestion in low Earth orbit due to the growing number of trackable objects exceeding 10 cm in size, as well as the surge in mega-constellations, which have surpassed 10,000 active satellites. The new patent strengthens Astroscale's intellectual property portfolio and reinforces its leadership in developing on-orbit servicing solutions.

The company's advancements are crucial for the long-term sustainability of Earth's orbital environment, addressing the challenges posed by the accumulation of space debris and the need for effective removal strategies.
