Billionaire entrepreneur and civilian astronaut Jared Isaacman is scheduled to appear before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation on April 9 for a confirmation hearing regarding his nomination to lead NASA. Isaacman, CEO of Shift4 and a two-time SpaceX mission participant, was nominated by President Trump in December. His confirmation process occurs amid challenges for NASA, including potential budget reductions for missions like the James Webb Space Telescope and workforce reductions. The hearing, chaired by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), will also address the nomination of Olivia Trusty to the Federal Communications Commission. Isaacman's background includes co-founding Draken International and financing the Inspiration4 orbital spaceflight in 2021. He subsequently acquired three additional SpaceX missions under the Polaris Program, including the Polaris Dawn mission, which featured the first private spacewalk. Future Polaris missions are pending. A group of 28 former NASA astronauts has voiced support for Isaacman's nomination, citing his passion for space exploration and potential to invigorate NASA.
