ESA Documentary Spotlights Space Debris Crisis and Sustainable Space Economy Efforts

16:16, 08 April

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

The European Space Agency (ESA) premiered its short documentary, "Space Debris: Is it a Crisis?" at the 9th European Conference on Space Debris on April 1, 2025. The film highlights the escalating problem of space debris and its potential impact on future space missions.

Through its Space Safety Programme, ESA is dedicated to protecting both space missions and Earth-based infrastructure from hazards originating in space. These hazards include asteroids, solar storms, and the growing issue of human-generated space debris. The agency is actively developing and participating in missions and projects aimed at understanding and mitigating these risks.

ESA is also committed to creating a sustainable future in space by promoting a circular economy in orbit. This involves developing innovative technologies for in-orbit satellite servicing and ensuring that new spacecraft are designed to minimize debris creation. These efforts are essential to maintaining safe and accessible orbits for future generations.
