NASA Advances Electrified Aircraft Tech with New Power Converters, Thermal Management, and Safety Systems

05:21, 26 March

NASA is developing advanced technologies for electrified aircraft, focusing on power converters, thermal management, and safety systems. Research includes lighter, more efficient power converters for megawatt-class aircraft, with power densities 2-3 times greater than current models. Innovations like the GIMC-HEIST converter use silicon carbide MOSFETs for higher efficiency. The HEATheR project minimizes powertrain thermal load through innovative power and thermal management, reducing heat loss and weight. Advanced circuit breakers are also under development, designed to respond rapidly to electrical failures and manage significant power levels at high altitudes. NASA's ACERO project is testing a Portable Airspace Management System (PAMS) for aerial wildland firefighting, enabling 24/7 operations even in low-visibility conditions. These advancements aim to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in air travel.
