SpaceX Identifies Cause of Starship Flight 7 Loss; Flight 8 Targeted for Late February with Hardware Upgrades

SpaceX has identified the cause of the Starship Flight 7 loss as propellant leaks resulting from an unexpectedly strong harmonic response. This response increased stress on the propulsion system, leading to fires and engine shutdowns. Telemetry was lost before the autonomous flight termination system activated. To address the issue, SpaceX conducted a 60-second static fire test on the Starship for Flight 8, testing various engine thrust levels and hardware configurations. Hardware changes to fuel feedlines, propellant temperature adjustments, and a new operating thrust target are being implemented. Vents and a nitrogen purge system are also being added to reduce flammability. Flight 8, targeted for launch as soon as February 28 pending FAA approval, will aim to achieve Flight 7's objectives, including deploying Starlink satellite mass simulators and testing reentry protection technologies. The Super Heavy booster will feature upgraded avionics, power distribution systems, and Raptor engine igniters.
