The accord, established in September 2025, streamlines the regulatory pathway for nuclear projects, with the goal of reducing approval timelines from the current three to four years to approximately two years. This acceleration is anticipated to expedite the construction of new nuclear power facilities, thereby bolstering energy independence and generating substantial high-quality employment opportunities.
The collaboration has already catalyzed substantial commercial ventures. X-Energy, in partnership with Centrica, is set to construct up to 12 advanced modular reactors in Hartlepool, northeast England. This initiative alone could generate enough power for approximately 1.5 million homes and is projected to create up to 2,500 jobs, contributing an estimated £12 billion in economic value to the region. Concurrently, Holtec and EDF are collaborating on developing data centers powered by small modular reactors in Nottinghamshire, a project valued at around £11 billion, expected to create thousands of skilled jobs.
The UK government has placed a value exceeding £50 billion ($68 billion) on these commercial agreements. The expansion of nuclear power is a central pillar of the UK's ambition to become a clean energy superpower, aligning with its objective to cultivate more homegrown, clean energy sources for robust energy security. The UK's nuclear sector has seen significant growth, with employment increasing by 35% between 2021 and 2024, reaching approximately 87,000 workers, driven by new projects like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.
