INPEX Spearheads World's Largest CO2 Methane Test Facility Construction

Edited by: an_lymons

INPEX Corporation, in partnership with Australia Gas Pty Ltd, has commenced construction on what is set to be the world's largest CO2 methane test facility. This project is a key component of a joint technology development initiative focused on the commercialization of CO2 methane systems.

The facility is designed with a significant production capacity of 400 normal cubic meters of methane per hour, which is comparable to the daily energy needs of approximately 10,000 households. The initiative is being carried out under a commission from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), highlighting a mutual dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions. The test facility is strategically situated next to INPEX's Nagaoka Field Office in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, with demonstration tests scheduled for fiscal year 2025.

These upcoming tests will concentrate on producing synthetic methane, also known as e-methane, by processing carbon dioxide (CO2) and integrating it into INPEX's existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure. This process marks a crucial advancement in the effort to decarbonize city gas and establish a more sustainable energy supply chain. The collaboration between INPEX and Australia Gas Pty Ltd began in 2021, with the shared goal of commercializing CO2 methane systems.

INPEX has been actively involved in foundational technology development for CO2 methane at the Nagaoka Field Office since 2017, achieving a notable synthetic methane production capacity of 8 normal cubic meters per hour with an experimental reactor. This prior success provides a strong basis for the current, larger-scale undertaking. This initiative aligns with broader global efforts to combat climate change and transition towards cleaner energy sources.
