BYD Megawatt Flash Charging Debuts in Dubai, Revolutionizing EV Refueling

Edited by: an_lymons

BYD, in partnership with Al-Futtaim, has launched its advanced Megawatt Flash Charging technology in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in September 2025. This innovative system, a key component of BYD's Super e-Platform, delivers a peak charging power of 1 megawatt (1,000 kW), enabling a 10C charging rate. This allows electric vehicles (EVs) to gain approximately 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes, comparable to refueling a conventional gasoline car.

Lucas Bellieud of Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility highlighted the technology's alignment with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, emphasizing how rapid charging addresses a significant barrier to widespread EV adoption. This demonstration in Dubai marks the first deployment of this technology outside of China. BYD has ambitious plans to expand its Megawatt Flash Charging network, with over 600 stations slated for deployment across the Middle East by the end of 2026. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the practicality of EVs for residents and businesses in the UAE, contributing to the nation's objectives for reducing carbon emissions from the transportation sector.

The UAE's commitment to sustainable transportation is further demonstrated by initiatives such as the EV Green Charger Initiative, which has already established over 400 charging stations across Dubai, with plans for continued expansion. The Megawatt Flash Charging technology represents a paradigm shift in EV charging, moving beyond incremental improvements to offer an experience comparable to refueling gasoline vehicles. The Super e-Platform is built upon a full-domain 1000V high-voltage architecture, supporting unprecedented charging currents of 1000A and a 10C charging rate, both recognized as world records for mass-produced vehicles. This technological leap directly addresses charging time, a critical factor identified as a significant barrier to EV adoption. The ability to add substantial range in minutes alleviates "range anxiety" and makes EV ownership a more convenient option for daily use and longer journeys.

The broader impact of these advancements extends to national climate goals, as highlighted by the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, demonstrating how technological innovation can powerfully enable environmental sustainability. BYD's Megawatt Flash Charging system, powered by its Flash Charging Battery, boasts a full-domain 1000V high-voltage architecture, allowing for an unprecedented charging current of 1000A and a charging rate of 10C, both world records for mass-produced vehicles. The result is a staggering 1 megawatt (1000 kW) charging power, enabling the world's highest peak charging speed This advancement effectively matches the time it takes to refuel an internal combustion engine car, enabling the charging of an EV to be as quick and seamless as traditional fuelling. This leap in charging technology will empower more individuals and organizations to embrace electric mobility, directly contributing to the UAE's efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector.
