YouTube Implements AI-Powered Age Verification to Enhance User Safety

16:10, 30 July

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

YouTube is introducing an AI-driven age estimation system to better identify users under 18, even if they have not accurately declared their age during account creation. This initiative aims to provide a safer and more age-appropriate experience for younger users on the platform.

The system analyzes various signals, such as user activity and account longevity, to infer a user's age. If the AI determines a user is under 18, it automatically applies age-appropriate protections, including disabling personalized advertising, enabling digital well-being tools like "take a break" and bedtime reminders, and limiting repetitive recommendations on sensitive topics.

Users who believe the system has misidentified their age can verify their true age by providing a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a selfie. This verification process ensures that only users confirmed to be over 18 can access age-restricted content.

This development aligns with global efforts to enhance online safety for minors. For instance, the UK's Online Safety Act, effective July 2025, requires tech companies to implement age verification measures to prevent under-18s from accessing adult and harmful content online. Similarly, several U.S. states have enacted or proposed laws mandating age verification on social media platforms to protect younger users from inappropriate material.

By leveraging AI technology, YouTube aims to create a more secure digital environment, allowing users to explore and learn without undue risk. The company plans to monitor the system's performance closely and expand its implementation to other regions in the future.
