Starlink Expands Internet Services in Kenya and Air France

Starlink has launched a new monthly residential plan in Kenya priced at US$30.87, shortly after ISP Safaricom enhanced its fibre Internet speeds. The new Mini kit, available for US$208.38, offers speeds up to 100 Mbps, making it attractive for budget-conscious consumers. This comes after Starlink's initial entry into the Kenyan market in July 2023 with a more expensive option priced at US$347.25.

In August 2024, Starlink introduced a US$15 monthly kit rental option, aiming to broaden its accessibility. In response, Safaricom, which controls 36.7% of Kenya's broadband market, upgraded its plans, now offering a 1 Gbps connection for US$155. This competitive landscape highlights Safaricom's concerns about the disruptive potential of satellite services like Starlink.

Starlink's service promises high-speed, low-latency Internet even in remote areas, gaining popularity among users seeking reliable connectivity. Meanwhile, Safaricom is reportedly preparing to launch its own satellite Internet service to counter rising competition.

In another significant development, Air France has announced plans to implement Starlink's high-speed Wi-Fi on its aircraft, becoming the first major European airline to do so. This follows a similar agreement with United Airlines, which aims to equip its fleet with Starlink connectivity by 2025.

Air France's partnership with Starlink is expected to revolutionize in-flight Internet services, offering passengers a terrestrial-like experience. The airline will provide free Wi-Fi for its Flying Blue customers across all cabins, replacing its current providers. With over 6,000 satellites in orbit, Starlink continues to expand its reach, now serving over 3 million customers globally.
