IKEA Launches 'Phone Sleep' Collection: The Swedish Solution to Digital Overload Before Bedtime

Edited by: Tetiana Pin

The Swedish furniture behemoth, IKEA, has unveiled an innovative new line called the "Phone Sleep" collection. This initiative is more than just a product launch; it serves as a compelling call to action, urging consumers to re-evaluate their personal boundaries in an age of pervasive digitalization, particularly concerning their crucial pre-sleep routines.

Central to the collection are miniature beds, meticulously styled to resemble classic IKEA furniture, but designed specifically to house smartphones. These tiny sleeping quarters are equipped with integrated NFC chips. These chips function by logging the duration the device remains undisturbed and stationary. This collected data is then transmitted to the official IKEA application, enabling users to monitor and subsequently refine their evening habits for better rest.

The campaign has been significantly amplified in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through a gamified program dubbed the "Phone Sleep Challenge." This challenge encourages participants to demonstrate discipline by placing their electronic gadgets in these designated mini-beds for a minimum duration of seven hours every night. Those who successfully complete this requirement for seven consecutive nights are eligible to receive a reward: a voucher worth 100 dirhams, which equates to approximately 2200 rubles, redeemable for purchases at IKEA stores.

To qualify for participation in the challenge, customers must first make a minimum expenditure of 750 dirhams within IKEA outlets. This purchase must include at least one item from the store’s extensive sleep assortment. Upon meeting this financial prerequisite, the customer is then provided with a complimentary mini-bed to begin the challenge. This structure effectively integrates the wellness initiative with the retail experience.

This strategic move underscores IKEA’s commitment to weaving the importance of quality rest into the fabric of daily life. According to findings published in the IKEA Sleep Report 2025, residents of the UAE achieved a sleep quality score of 68 out of 100. While this figure is slightly above the global average score of 63, it clearly indicates ample room for improvement. Carla Klumpenaar, the General Manager for Marketing at IKEA Al-Futtaim, emphasized this point, stating that sleep is perhaps the most vital "design project" in our lives, yet it is frequently neglected. She characterized mobile phones as "uninvited guests" disrupting the sanctity of the bedroom.

Supporting the necessity of this intervention, academic research consistently highlights that screen time is a primary culprit in sleep deprivation. A study focusing on students revealed that engaging with a smartphone for just one hour before retiring for the night escalates the risk of insomnia by a substantial 59% and effectively "steals" an average of 24 minutes of sleep per night. The "Phone Sleep" collection is thus designed to transform a common behavioral issue into an engaging, health-focused practice, utilizing the physical presence of the miniature bed as a simple yet powerful ritual to help individuals reclaim control over their personal time and achieve restorative rest.
