QuEra Installs Quantum Computer in Japan

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

QuEra Computing has installed its first quantum computer outside its own labs in Tsukuba, Japan, at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).

This gate-based neutral-atom quantum computer supports Japan's national quantum strategy and the new G-QuAT research center, focusing on quantum computing and artificial intelligence. The system is integrated with the NVIDIA-based ABCI-Q supercomputer, forming a hybrid quantum-classical computing platform. This is a core element of Japan's strategy for quantum computing in areas like drug discovery, logistics, and climate modeling.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba visited the G-QuAT facility, declaring 2025 as 'the first year of quantum industrialization'. QuEra's system uses a scalable, gate-based neutral-atom architecture, operating at room temperature. The installation follows recent agreements with the UK's national quantum program and a $230 million funding round led by Google, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, and Valor Equity Partners.
