Mumbai Launches Electric Hydrofoil Ferries

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

Mumbai, India, is modernizing its urban transport with electric hydrofoil ferries.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has procured 15 electric boats for approximately ₹330 crore.

These ferries will operate from the Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Caves.

Mumbai's operator JalVimana partners with Candela, a Swedish company.

Candela's P-12 model uses hydrofoil wings to lift the hull.

This reduces drag and energy consumption by up to 80%.

The Candela P-12 ferries carry 30 passengers.

They operate at speeds up to 25 knots.

A route from the Gateway of India to Alibaug takes under 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel times.

These electric ferries are part of Mumbai's eco-friendly transport initiative.

The project supports Maharashtra's goal to reduce carbon emissions.

It promotes sustainable transportation options.

The success of these ferries could expand electric maritime transport.

Additional routes and services may be introduced.
