Apple Releases iOS 26 with Transformative "Liquid Glass" Design and Enhanced Connectivity

Edited by: Tetiana Pin

Apple has officially launched iOS 26, introducing a significant update that ushers in a transformative "Liquid Glass" design language for iPhones. This release, available since September 15, 2025, marks the most substantial visual departure for the iPhone interface since iOS 7 in 2013. The new aesthetic emphasizes transparency, dynamic adaptation of interface elements, and an overall sense of depth, aiming to create a more immersive and fluid user experience.

The "Liquid Glass" design, developed over several years, features translucent elements that reflect and refract their surroundings in real-time, enhancing visual engagement. This design philosophy is applied across various interface components, including app icons, controls, navigation bars, and alerts. For instance, app icons are crafted with multiple layers of "Liquid Glass," offering light, dark, or tinted options, and even a clear glass appearance that creates refractive effects against wallpapers. The Lock Screen has also been reimagined, with elements like the clock and widgets dynamically adapting their size and appearance to complement the user's wallpaper and incoming notifications.

Beyond the visual overhaul, iOS 26 introduces key functionalities to boost user productivity and communication. A notable addition is the call filtering feature, which prompts unknown callers to state their name and reason for calling, allowing users to decide whether to engage. Furthermore, an AI-driven battery optimization system intelligently manages device settings, such as screen brightness, to extend battery life, a crucial consideration as AI features become more integrated into daily use. This "Adaptive Power" feature learns user habits to optimize power consumption without interfering with high-performance tasks.

In communication, iOS 26 brings a powerful AI-driven live translation feature integrated across the Messages app, FaceTime calls, and phone conversations, offering real-time text and spoken translation. This feature aims to break down language barriers, making global communication more accessible. While generative AI features were more prominent in iOS 18, live translation exemplifies Apple's subtle integration of AI advancements.

Apple has also revised its operating system versioning strategy, adopting a year-based model. Starting with this release, all operating systems launched in 2026 will be designated as version 26, a move intended to unify nomenclature and simplify tracking across its ecosystem, aligning with trends seen in the tech industry. The update is compatible with iPhone 11 models and newer, ensuring advanced features are optimized for recent hardware. The rollout began on September 15, 2025, with installation times varying by device.
