Tesla Launches Standard Model 3 and Model Y Variants to Capture European Budget EV Market

Edited by: Tetiana Pin

Tesla has executed a strategic maneuver by introducing revised entry-level versions of its core vehicles, the Model 3 and Model Y, designated as "Standard." This initiative is specifically designed to broaden the company's consumer base across the European continent by offering a more accessible price point for transitioning to electric mobility. These variants first appeared in the United States in 2025. The Model 3 Standard was launched with a price tag of $36,990, while the Model Y Standard began at $44,990. This decision in the U.S. market was partly a response to the discontinuation of federal subsidies, highlighting Tesla's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge despite changing regulatory landscapes.

The commencement of European production for these models took place early in 2025 at Gigafactory Berlin in Germany. Manufacturing of the updated Model Y (known internally as Juniper) began in January 2025, followed by the regular output of the Model Y Standard starting in mid-February 2025. Concentrating production in Berlin underscores the region's strategic importance, as this factory exclusively supplies the European market. However, the initial European pricing structure diverged from the American one: in Germany, the Model Y Standard was initially valued at €44,990—a figure €5,000 higher than the cost of the preceding base version.

The launch of the Standard variants appears to be a direct countermeasure to increasing market turbulence. This move followed a significant downturn in Tesla’s European sales, which plummeted by 27.9% year-over-year in May 2025. During this period, competitors, notably Chinese manufacturers, aggressively expanded their market share by offering more budget-friendly alternatives. Despite the challenges faced by individual players like Tesla, the broader picture shows robust growth: overall electric vehicle sales across Europe grew by 27% during the first five months of 2025 compared to the previous year, signaling a clear shift in consumer preference toward sustainable transportation.

Tesla achieved the necessary cost reduction for these new Standard versions by implementing a simplified feature set. This simplification involves utilizing a battery with reduced capacity and modifying the interior trim materials. Crucially, the Model Y Standard, which became available for sale in Europe in October 2025, was ultimately introduced at an aggressive starting price point of approximately €39,990. This represents a substantial reduction—roughly €10,000 less than the former entry-level model, making the vehicles highly competitive.

To differentiate the offerings and clarify the hierarchy, the previous base model has been rebranded as the "Premium Rear-Wheel Drive." European customers who order these new base models can anticipate deliveries commencing shortly after the sales launch, specifically projected between December 2025 and January 2026.
