Tesla Leads Portugal's EV Market Despite European Sales Challenges

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

In June, the electric vehicle (EV) market in Portugal showed interesting trends, with Tesla leading the way among light passenger EV manufacturers.

Tesla sold 1,315 units in June, a 7.3% increase compared to the same month in 2024. However, this wasn't enough to overcome a 25.3% decline in the first half of the year, with a total of 4,088 new registrations.

BMW secured second place, with a 46.6% increase in June and a 21% growth in the first half of the year. BYD, from China, took third place with 342 units sold in June, a 50% increase, and 2,135 units from January to June, a 126.4% increase.

Volvo and Mercedes-Benz completed the top five. Volvo saw declines, while Mercedes-Benz showed growth. Some brands sold only one electric model in Portugal in May, while Mazda sold its first two units of the year in June.

Tesla faces significant challenges in Europe. In April, Tesla's sales in Europe fell by 40.5% compared to 2024. This decline is attributed to increased competition from Chinese EV brands and negative public perception of CEO Elon Musk's political affiliations.

In summary, the EV market in Portugal continues to grow, with Tesla maintaining a prominent position, despite facing challenges both nationally and in Europe.
