Ferrari has unveiled the 849 Testarossa, a plug-in hybrid supercar that pays homage to the legendary 1980s model while significantly advancing automotive performance. This new flagship model, succeeding the SF90 Stradale, marks a major step in Ferrari's strategy to integrate heritage with cutting-edge hybrid technology.
The 849 Testarossa is powered by a re-engineered 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine combined with three electric motors, producing a combined output of 1,050 horsepower. This potent powertrain enables the supercar to achieve a top speed exceeding 330 km/h (205 mph). The hybrid system enhances acceleration and efficiency, with electric motors providing instant torque for exhilarating performance. Ferrari's commitment to hybridization is part of a broader strategy aiming for 60% of its production to be hybrid or fully electric by 2026, and 80% by 2030.
The 849 Testarossa is available in both coupe and retractable-top spider variants. Pricing starts at €460,000 for the coupe and €500,000 for the spider. European deliveries are scheduled for the second and third quarters of next year, with U.S. deliveries to follow approximately three months later. This launch follows Ferrari's recent introductions of hybrid models like the 296 Speciale and underscores the brand's diverse powertrain strategy under CEO Benedetto Vigna.
The design of the 849 Testarossa draws inspiration from the original 1984 model, incorporating its distinctive side strakes, and also features influences from 1970s prototypes. The interior has been modernized with a new human-machine interface and a redesigned steering wheel with tactile mechanical controls. For enhanced performance, an optional Assetto Fiorano package is available, which reduces the car's weight by approximately 30 kg and improves aerodynamic downforce. This package, along with the use of advanced materials like carbon fiber and titanium, contributes to an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.
