EU Sees CO2 Emissions Drop in New Cars, Electric Vehicle Sales Rise

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

European Union data indicates a decrease in CO2 emissions from new cars. The average emissions for new cars in 2023 were 106.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer, slightly down from 106.4 grams the previous year. This reduction is attributed to the increasing sales of electric vehicles. The EU is on track to meet its target of 93.6 grams by 2025, down from 115.1 grams in 2024. Between 2019 and 2023, emissions from new cars in the EU, Norway, and Iceland decreased by 28%. The shift towards electric vehicles is a key factor in this trend, with the electric vehicle market share in the EU nearly doubling to 24%.
