YouTube Updates Monetization Rules to Address AI-Generated Content

Edited by: Dmitry Drozd

YouTube is implementing new guidelines for its Partner Program (YPP), effective July 2025, to address the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content. The updated policies aim to curb the monetization of "AI slop"—content that is mass-produced, repetitive, and lacks significant human input or originality. This move is a direct response to the growing volume of AI-created videos that can dilute the user experience.

The platform emphasizes that all content, regardless of creation method, must adhere to community guidelines. A new labeling system will require creators to disclose the use of realistic AI-generated or synthetic content. These labels will be visible in video descriptions and, for sensitive topics, directly within the video player. This initiative aims to foster transparency and maintain viewer trust.

In March 2025, Paramount Pictures faced criticism for an Instagram promotional video for the film "Novocaine" that used AI scripting and narration, highlighting a broader apprehension towards low-quality, inauthentic AI-generated material. YouTube's updated policies underscore that while AI can be a valuable tool, it should enhance, not replace, human creativity. Content primarily generated by AI without substantial human involvement, such as original commentary or editing, may face demonetization, reinforcing YouTube's commitment to a quality ecosystem that prioritizes originality and authenticity.
