Microsoft is rolling out GPT 5.2 to Copilot on the web, Windows, and mobile. Microsoft tells me it'll roll out to everyone in the coming weeks. 'Smart' mode on Copilot routes to GPT 5.1, while Smart Plus uses GPT 5.2 to Thinking (likely standard, low juice).
Microsoft Launches "Smart Plus" Mode with GPT-5.2 in Copilot

In December 2025, Microsoft announced a significant update to its AI assistant ecosystem with the introduction of Smart Plus mode. This new feature integrates OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.2 series into Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio, targeting professional-grade tasks that require advanced reasoning and multi-step logic.
Smart Plus: Advanced Reasoning for Work
The Smart Plus mode utilizes the GPT-5.2 Thinking model, which is designed to solve problems through deliberate, step-by-step reasoning. This model serves as the "thinking engine" for Copilot, prioritizing accuracy and structural quality for high-stakes business tasks.
- Expert-Level Productivity: In the GDPval benchmark—a rigorous evaluation measuring knowledge work across 44 occupations—GPT-5.2 Thinking achieved a win/tie rate of 70.9% against human experts. This marks a major improvement over GPT-5’s 38.8% baseline.
- Coding Performance: The model sets a new standard for software engineering, scoring 55.6% on SWE-bench Pro and 80.0% on SWE-bench Verified. These results indicate a significantly more dependable tool for real-world debugging and code refactoring.
- Long-Context Reasoning: GPT-5.2 Thinking shows strong performance on long-context retrieval tests, successfully locating and integrating information in documents far beyond typical context windows. This includes leading performance on 4-needle evaluations and the MRCRv2 benchmark, which tests accuracy across complex, long-horizon projects.
- Creation of Office Artifacts: The mode excels at generating complex "office artifacts," such as advanced financial models in Excel and structured, data-driven PowerPoint presentations.
Integration with Work IQ and GitHub Copilot
The new model series is deeply integrated into Microsoft’s core productivity and developer tools:
- Work IQ Integration: In Microsoft 365, GPT-5.2 is grounded in Work IQ, enabling it to reason across a user’s "work context"—including emails, meetings, and SharePoint data—to provide actionable business insights.
- GitHub Copilot: GPT-5.2 has begun surfacing in GitHub Copilot as part of Microsoft's broader rollout of GPT-5.x models into its coding assistants, enhancing the "Agent" and "Edit" modes for developers.
- Copilot Studio: Developers can now select GPT-5.2 Thinking in Copilot Studio to build custom agents, benefiting from improved instruction-following and reliable tool-calling.
Availability and Rollout
The rollout of GPT-5.2 and Smart Plus follows a phased deployment schedule:
- Current Access: GPT-5.2 is now available for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and for Copilot Enterprise and Business subscribers.
- Microsoft 365 Premium: Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers are expected to receive access to the new model series in early 2026.
- Global Platforms: The update is currently rolling out across the Copilot web interface, Windows, and mobile applications.
- Free Tier: While the GPT-5.2 series will power the general Copilot experience, access to the high-resource "Thinking" mode will likely be subject to daily limits for non-paid users.
