Anthropic Offers Free Memory Import Tool to Lower Switching Costs for AI Users

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Anthropic has expanded its proprietary "Memory" feature—previously available only to paid subscribers—to the free tier of its Claude AI chatbot. This update comes with a new data import tool that makes it easier to transfer learned preferences and conversational context directly from rival platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

The main goal of this rollout is to reduce user “switching costs,” lowering the friction for people who want to move between different AI ecosystems. The move follows Claude’s recent success on mobile, where it climbed to the top of the free apps rankings in the Apple App Store, overtaking ChatGPT.

To use the import feature, users simply paste a specific prompt provided by Anthropic into their current third‑party AI assistant. That assistant then generates a code block containing the user’s stored memories and personalized settings, which can be copied and pasted into Claude’s “Memory” section. Once imported, Claude can continue conversations with the same context and preferences, creating a smoother transition for switchers.

Anthropic’s focus on retaining users with tighter personalization—while prioritizing text‑based reasoning and long‑term context—positions Claude as an increasingly attractive alternative in the crowded AI assistant market.
