Alibaba Unveils Trillion-Parameter AI Model, Qwen3-Max-Preview

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Alibaba has launched its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date, the Qwen3-Max-Preview, a significant development that positions the company at the forefront of the global AI race. This new flagship model boasts over one trillion parameters, making it a formidable competitor against industry leaders such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind. The release underscores Alibaba's commitment to technological sovereignty and its strategic vision for China's rapidly expanding AI sector.

The Qwen3-Max-Preview model features an extensive context window, capable of processing up to 262,144 tokens, with specific input and output limits of 258,048 and 32,768 tokens, respectively. Context caching further optimizes performance for extended interactions. In benchmark evaluations, the model has demonstrated exceptional capabilities, achieving the top position in Arena-Hardv2 and scoring 80.6 in the AIME25 mathematical reasoning test, a substantial improvement over its predecessor.

These performance metrics highlight the model's advanced proficiency in complex tasks, including mathematical reasoning and coding, where it competes effectively with models like Claude Opus 4 and Deepseek-V3.1. The Qwen3-Max-Preview is accessible through platforms such as Qwen Chat, Alibaba Cloud API, and OpenRouter, and is integrated with developer frameworks like SGLang and vLLM, as well as local usage tools like Ollama and LMStudio, signaling Alibaba's intent to foster widespread adoption and innovation.

This launch marks a pivotal moment for China's AI ecosystem, which has been strategically cultivating its capabilities in line with national initiatives such as the "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan." This plan aims for China to become a primary AI innovation center by 2030, with significant advancements in AI theories, technologies, and applications. While the industry trend leans towards more efficient, smaller models, Alibaba's expansion into trillion-parameter territory represents a strategic investment in scale and advanced capabilities.

The Qwen3-Max-Preview model is closed-source, a departure from earlier Qwen releases. Its commercial positioning and tiered pricing structure on Alibaba Cloud reflect a focused market engagement strategy. Pricing tiers start at $0.861 per million input tokens and $3.441 per million output tokens for usage up to 32K tokens, with higher rates for longer contexts. This advancement is viewed within the broader context of China's ambition to lead in AI by 2030, with companies like Alibaba playing a crucial role in this national objective.
