ECMWF Releases Energy-Efficient AI Weather Model

20:36, 25 February

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has released its Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (AIFS) to the public, free of charge. This AI model predicts weather conditions for 3-15 days, using significantly less energy. Based in Europe, the ECMWF reports that AIFS consumes a thousand times less energy than traditional physics-based models and is expected to perform 20% better in forecasting wind, temperature, and precipitation. AI models can identify complex atmospheric patterns directly from data, offering an advantage over traditional methods that simplify atmospheric dynamics.
