OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT for Mac with Coding App Integration

OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT that enhances its integration with popular coding applications on Mac, available for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, with support for Enterprise and Education coming soon.

The "Work with Apps" feature allows ChatGPT to read and analyze code directly from applications such as Xcode, VS Code, TextEdit, and Terminal. Users can send selected code to ChatGPT alongside prompts, enabling it to provide suggestions without the need for copying and pasting.

This integration utilizes Apple's macOS Accessibility API, allowing ChatGPT to read text from compatible apps. For VS Code, a specific extension must be installed to enable this functionality. The system can process up to 200 lines of code in terminal applications and can focus on specific selections within open editor panes.

A recent demonstration showcased ChatGPT identifying missing code in a solar system project and suggesting fixes. However, it is important to note that ChatGPT cannot directly write code into development environments; it provides suggestions that users must implement manually.

OpenAI views this integration as a key step towards more advanced AI capabilities and plans to expand functionality to other text-based applications in the future. Users can manage compatible apps through Settings > Work with Apps > Manage Apps, marking a significant advancement in AI-assisted coding.
