Indian classical vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty has been honored with a prominent feature on a Times Square billboard in New York City, as part of Spotify's global EQUAL initiative. This campaign is dedicated to celebrating and amplifying the work of influential women in music across the globe.

Chakraborty's appearance coincides with the release of her autobiographical album, "Pankh," on July 11, 2025. The album, a collaboration with composer Shantanu Moitra, is described as a sonic autobiography that blends classical traditions with personal narratives. The title "Pankh," meaning "wings," symbolizes Chakraborty's artistic growth and pursuit of creative freedom. She has been promoting "Pankh" through an ongoing tour across India, with scheduled performances in Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.

The Spotify EQUAL campaign has significantly boosted women in the music industry. Since its inception, over 20,800 women artists have been added to EQUAL playlists, and more than 1,200 ambassadors have received support. In 2024 alone, the campaign facilitated 30 million artist discoveries through its playlists, highlighting its extensive reach.

Chakraborty expressed her surprise and delight at the recognition, noting the rarity of seeing a classical musician on a Times Square billboard, which she sees as a testament to the evolving landscape of music recognition. Her inclusion in the EQUAL campaign underscores a growing global appreciation for Indian classical music. Initiatives like Spotify's EQUAL program are vital in addressing the gender disparity in music, providing platforms for artists like Chakraborty to connect with broader audiences.

"Pankh," which took four years to complete, is more than a collection of songs; it is a narrative of Chakraborty's life, exploring themes of childhood, love, and significant life events. Notably, Chakraborty has also penned lyrics for the album, inspired by deeply resonant stories, marking a significant expansion of her artistic identity alongside her dedication to classical vocal traditions. The collaboration with Shantanu Moitra, known for his innovative musical compositions, enriches the album's unique soundscape by merging traditional elements with contemporary storytelling.
