Derek Hartmann Triumphs at the 2025 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna

American pianist Derek Hartmann has won the 17th International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna 2025. The 28-year-old performed Piano Concerto No. 4 in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein on May 24, 2025. Hartmann will receive a Bösendorfer grand piano and a cash prize of 30,000 euros.

Hartmann is a pianist and pedagogue and a doctoral candidate at the Yale School of Music. He previously studied at Northwestern University and the Yale School of Music. In 2024, he won first prize at the Chicago International Music Competition and received awards for his interpretations of classical sonatas and Russian works.

Hartmann currently teaches piano at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. He has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center and the Kravis Center. Jonas Stark and Martin Nöbauer jointly won 2nd prize. The Klemens Kramert Special Prize went to Martin Nöbauer, and the Dichler Special Prize to Tianyou Li.
