BTS Releases Fifth Studio Album 'Arirang' Following Military Service
Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One
Global music group BTS officially returned with the release of their fifth studio album, "Arirang," on March 20, 2026. The 14-track collection marks the group's first full-band material since the 2022 hiatus, which allowed all seven members—RM, Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—to complete mandatory military service in South Korea. The album title is a cultural reference to "Arirang," South Korea's most recognized traditional folk song, embodying themes of longing, separation, and resilience, often associated with the Korean concept of 'Han'.
The creative structure of "Arirang" highlights extensive member involvement, signaling an artistic evolution following their time apart. Leader RM, Kim Nam-joon, is credited as a songwriter on thirteen of the fourteen compositions, establishing him as a primary creative anchor. SUGA is credited on eleven tracks, J-Hope on ten, Jung Kook on four, with V and Jimin each contributing to two songs. This internal creative direction contrasts with earlier work, demonstrating a maturation in their approach to album construction.
"Arirang" integrates a dynamic sonic landscape through high-profile international producer collaborations, merging Korean cultural resonance with global pop sensibilities. The production roster includes Diplo, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Flume. Tedder produced tracks such as "Body to Body" and "NORMAL," while Mike WiLL Made-It contributed to "Aliens" and "2.0." The thematic weight, rooted in the folk song, mirrors the group's journey of separation and reunion, which concluded for all members in June 2025.
To commemorate the launch, BTS is scheduled to present a live concert titled 'BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang' at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on March 21, 2026, which will be exclusively streamed on Netflix. Furthermore, the group will commence the 'Arirang World Tour' in April 2026, spanning 82 shows across 34 regions through 2027, their first global tour since 2022. The rollout also includes the feature-length documentary, 'BTS: The Return,' directed by Bao Nguyen, set for release on Netflix on March 27, 2026, offering intimate access to the album's creation and the members' reunion.
