The 33rd International Almerijazz Festival is set to once again infuse the city of Almería with vibrant music, running this year from October 24 through November 9. This significant cultural event traces its roots back to the city’s jazz history beginning in the 1970s. Far more than just a series of performances, the festival is positioned as a crucial catalyst for deeper musical dialogue within the region. Diego Cruz, Almería’s Councilor for Culture, highlighted that the current iteration of the festival showcases a distinct identity by successfully merging globally recognized stars with emerging national talents and established local jazz ensembles.
This year’s program is rich with diverse styles, designed to provide an experience that is both passionate and deeply personal. This emphasis on intimacy is reflected in the selection of smaller, more atmospheric venues: the Teatro Apolo and the newly re-joined Centro Cultural Fundación Unicaja. Fundación Unicaja’s continued support underscores its commitment to this established cultural tradition, viewing it as an opportunity for residents to enjoy world-class jazz, thus cementing Almería’s status as a regional epicenter for the art form.
The festival officially commences on October 24 at the Teatro Apolo with a performance by the Arturo Pueyo Cuarteto. The following evening, October 25, the same venue will host La Causa Swing featuring La Funkería, as part of the special “Night of Jazz Made in Andalusia.” A major international draw is the appearance of legendary saxophonist Bobby Watson, who will perform alongside the Clasijazz Big Band, conducted by Duccio Bertini. This highly anticipated concert is scheduled for November 2 at the expansive Auditorio Maestro Padilla. Organizers have promoted this specific event as an exemplary display of jazz that is "diverse, intimate, and of the highest quality and warmth."
The mid-festival schedule is packed with other notable acts. Highlights include a piano solo showcase on November 4 by Lucía Rey, a nominee for Best Jazz Album, taking place at the Centro Cultural Fund Unicaja with the added benefit of free entry. Following this, the accomplished guitar duo of Tito Alcedo and Nono García is slated to perform on November 6. The international programming reaches a climax on November 7 with an evening dedicated to the Jacky Terrasson Trío.
The grand finale of Almerijazz is scheduled for November 9 at the Auditorio Maestro Padilla, promising a powerful conclusion. The Clasijazz Coro Gospel and Big Band, under the direction of Ramón Escalé, will present their unique interpretation of harmony, bringing the 33rd edition of the festival to a close. Celebrating 33 years, Almerijazz has evolved beyond a mere annual event; it functions as a space for internal reflection, where every concert mirrors the soul and each improvisation offers a chance for self-discovery.
