Violet Affleck, daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, detailed a disagreement with her mother regarding climate change in an essay for Yale's Global Health Review.
The 19-year-old Ivy League student recalled the argument during the Los Angeles fires in January, when her family sought refuge in a hotel.
Violet criticized the behavior of 'wealthiest citizens' as a significant factor driving the 'climate crisis,' while her mother was 'shell-shocked' by the inferno.
In her essay, titled 'A Chronically Ill Earth,' Violet expressed surprise at her mother's astonishment, stating she had always anticipated the fires.
She argued that society mishandles systemic crises like climate change and pandemics, treating them as isolated events rather than ongoing problems.
Violet also discussed the government's handling of COVID-19, claiming that even mild infections are dangerous and warning about the potential impact of bird flu.
She highlighted privilege and bias in disaster relief, noting that assistance flowed more quickly to wealthy homeowners than to those in need elsewhere.
Violet concluded by emphasizing the importance of 'following the science' even when it's frightening, rather than ignoring the risks until it's too late.
This isn't the first time Violet has advocated for causes she believes in, previously urging for mask mandates and speaking out against mask bans.
Her father, Ben Affleck, reportedly encouraged her to be 'realistic' about her campaigning efforts.
