Leighton Meester on Joining 'The Buccaneers' and Embracing Period Drama

14:31, 09 June

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Leighton Meester, known for her role in 'Gossip Girl,' has made a significant impact in the second season of Apple TV+'s 'The Buccaneers,' a series based on Edith Wharton's unfinished novel.

Meester reflects on her role, stating, "It's not really for me to say." She was drawn to the project, marking her first period drama, influenced by Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Wharton's 'The Age of Innocence'.

In 'The Buccaneers,' Meester plays Aunt Nell, a character with a secret, joining the ensemble cast including Christina Hendricks, Kristine Froseth, and Mia Threapleton. Nell's reunion with her sister, Nan, is a central plot point in the second season.

Series creator Katherine Jakeways describes Nell as "feisty" and nuanced, highlighting the character's complexity. Meester found the role intriguing, appreciating the opportunity to explore a character so different from herself.

Meester emphasizes the universal themes of motherhood and the complexities of relationships within the series. She notes that 'The Buccaneers' offers "the gift of hindsight to these women -- the dignity they deserved in their time."

The second season delves into more serious themes, including motherhood and the challenges faced by women. The show explores the reunion of Nell and Nan, as well as Jinny's struggles.
