LONDON (AP) -- David Beckham, the former England soccer captain and long-time UNICEF ambassador, is reportedly set to receive a knighthood in the upcoming honors list from King Charles III.

According to U.K. media reports, the knighthood recognizes Beckham's contributions to both soccer and British society. The BBC, without citing sources, indicated that the honor is forthcoming.

The knighthood will bestow the title "Sir David" upon Beckham, while his wife, Victoria Beckham, will become "Lady Beckham." Beckham previously received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003 for his services to soccer. Victoria Beckham was later awarded the same honor for her contributions to the fashion industry.

Honors are traditionally awarded twice a year, coinciding with the New Year and the King's birthday. These awards are primarily based on government recommendations, with the monarch also having input.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office and Buckingham Palace have declined to comment on the reports, adhering to standard protocol. The Associated Press has not independently verified the knighthood, which was initially reported by The Sun tabloid.

Footage from the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this month shows King Charles III seemingly alluding to a birthday present for Beckham. The King appeared to say "I'm glad it got to you," to which Beckham responded, "It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind."

Beckham holds the distinction of being the only English soccer player to score in three different World Cups. His career highlights include the treble-winning season of 1999 with Manchester United, where they secured the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles.

With 115 appearances for the England national team, Beckham ranks third in the all-time list and captained the side 59 times. After leaving Manchester United in 2003, he played for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy, and Paris Saint-Germain. He is now a co-owner of the MLS team Inter Miami.

His career also faced challenges, notably after the 1998 World Cup, where he received significant criticism. In the 2023 Netflix documentary series "Beckham," he discussed the abuse he endured, including the display of an effigy of him. The documentary series earned him an Emmy in 2024.

Beckham has been a style icon and a prominent supporter of charities, including UNICEF, which established "The David Beckham UNICEF Fund" in 2015. He also played a key role in London's successful bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
